Kérastase was founded in France in 1964 and is part of the L'Oréal group. It's a professional treatment brand: the formulas are designed for a diagnosed hair condition, not for generic use. This is why the range isn't organised by product type but by hair concern, which is exactly why it's easy to pick the wrong product when you're standing in front of the shelf.

How to read a Kérastase product name

Kérastase uses French words to indicate the format of the product, and the line name to indicate the concern it addresses. Once you understand the logic, every reference becomes instantly clear. "Kérastase Nutritive Bain Satin" means: Nutritive line (dry hair), shampoo format.

• Bain — this is the shampoo. It's not a shower gel: Kérastase simply calls all its shampoos this way.
• Fondant — the conditioner. Applied after shampooing, left on briefly and rinsed out. Detangles without weighing hair down.
• Lait — a lighter conditioner than the fondant, suited to fine hair.
• Masque — the mask. Longer leave-in time and higher concentration: this is the actual treatment step.
• Huile — oil, to be used on dry or damp hair, on the lengths and never on the scalp.
• Sérum — a leave-in treatment, generally lighter than the oil.
• Soin — a generic treatment, usually leave-in.

The practical rule: Bain cleanses, Fondant or Lait detangles, Masque repairs. Three different products that don't replace one another.

Kérastase lines: which one to choose based on your hair

Dry and brittle hair

Nutritive is the nourishing line. Suited to hair that looks dull, feels rough to the touch and soaks up any product instantly. The Bain Satin is the starting shampoo, while the Masque Intense is the richer version for very dry lengths.

Damaged or breaking hair

Résistance works on the internal structure of hair weakened by colour, heat or lightening. Bain Force Architecte is the entry-level step; Extentioniste is the variant designed for those growing their hair out who want to limit breakage on the ends.

Blonde, grey or bleached hair

Blond Absolu is the line for blondes. The Masque Ultra-Violet contains purple pigments that neutralise yellow tones: use it once or twice a week, not with every wash, otherwise hair can turn too cool-toned.

Coloured hair

Chroma Absolu protects cosmetic colour and slows its fading. It comes in a standard version and a Riche one, more nourishing, for coloured hair that is also dry.

Frizzy and unruly hair

How to build the routine
