Oxidant Emulsions: Which Volume to Use

The volume of the oxidant determines how much the colour can lighten and how far it opens the cuticle.

• 10 volumes (3%) — no lightening. For tone-on-tone, darkening, refreshing colour, and grey coverage with dedicated formulas.
• 20 volumes (6%) — lightens by 1-2 levels. This is the standard volume for grey coverage.
• 30 volumes (9%) — lightens by 2-3 levels.
• 40 volumes (12%) — lightens by 3-4 levels, to be used with high-lift formulas and bleaches. Never for direct application on the scalp.

The mixing ratio varies by line: generally 1:1 for permanent colour and 1:1.5 or 1:2 for high-lift formulas. Always check the brand's technical data sheet.

Bleach: How to Choose

Bleaching powders differ by the number of lightening levels they can achieve (generally 4 to 9) and by the presence of anti-yellow or protective agents. Compact powders produce less airborne dust than lightweight ones, making them preferable for freehand application, while dust-free formulas are recommended for close work on the scalp.

The most common mixing ratio is 1:2 with the oxidant, though it varies by product. Freehand techniques call for denser mixtures, while foil techniques require a more fluid consistency.
