Men's fragrance families
Identifying the fragrance family is the quickest way to narrow down your choice. The most common in men's perfumery:
- Fougère aromatic — lavender, geranium, vetiver, oakmoss and coumarin. This is the historic structure of men's fragrance: clean, recognisable, suited to any occasion.
- Woody aromatic — cedar, vetiver and sandalwood over a base of Mediterranean herbs. Understated, works well in the office.
- Citrus aromatic — bergamot, lemon and grapefruit with sage and rosemary. The freshest option, ideal for summer.
- Woody spicy — pepper, cardamom and ginger over a woody base. Bolder, suited to evening wear.
- Oriental woody — amber, patchouli and vanilla. Enveloping and very long-lasting, it comes into its own in cold weather.
- Leather — animalic and tobacco notes. Distinctive, for those looking for something less common.
Concentration: how long it lasts on the skin
- Eau de Toilette (EDT) — 4-10% essential oils, lasting 2-4 hours. The most common concentration in men's perfumery, suited to everyday wear.
- Eau de Parfum (EDP) — 10-15% essential oils, lasting 3-6 hours. The best compromise between longevity and price.
- Parfum / EDP Intense — 15-40% essential oils, lasting 6-8 hours. Two sprays are enough.
Many men's fragrances come in all three versions: same olfactory structure, different intensity and longevity. For the same bottle size, an EDP costs on average 25-35% more than an EDT but lasts roughly twice as long.
A few classics in our catalogue
Paco Rabanne 1 Million — woody spicy with red mandarin, cinnamon and leather. One of the best-selling men's fragrances in Italy, also available in the 200 ml size.
Paco Rabanne Invictus — citrus aquatic with grapefruit, bay leaf and guaiac wood. Fresh and sporty, suited to daytime and warm weather.
Paco Rabanne Phantom — lavender, lemon and vanilla with a modern twist. Available in EDT and in refillable EDP Intense.
Versace Eros — mint, green apple, tonka bean and vanilla. Available in Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum and Parfum, with increasing longevity.
Givenchy Gentleman — iris, pear and patchouli. Elegant and structured, excellent for evening wear and cold weather. Also available in the Boisée version.
Givenchy Pi Greco — vanilla oriental with mandarin, basil and tonka bean. Sweet and warm, a Nineties classic that's still very much in demand.
Dolce & Gabbana The One for Men — cardamom, mandarin and Virginia cedar. Fruity-woody, distinctive yet understated.
How to choose by season
Heat speeds up the evaporation of fragrance molecules, cold slows it down. In spring and summer, citrus, aquatic and light fougère fragrances in EDT concentration perform best, reapplied midday. In autumn and winter, woody spicy, oriental and leather fragrances in EDP or Parfum work well, unfolding gradually rather than fading in low temperatures.
Frequently asked questions about men's perfumes
How many sprays are needed?
Two or three for an Eau de Toilette, one or two for an Eau de Parfum, just one for a Parfum. The fragrance should be noticeable at conversation distance, not before you enter the room.
Where should it be applied?
On pulse points: base of the neck, behind the ears, wrists, inner elbows. Spray from 10-15 cm away, without rubbing — friction generates heat and alters how the notes develop.
Why doesn't the fragrance last?
Dry skin, a concentration too light for the season, or application on cooler areas of the body. Applying an unscented moisturiser before spraying noticeably extends longevity, especially after shaving, when skin is more dehydrated.
Can the same fragrance be worn all year round?
Yes, but by changing concentration: the EDT version in summer and the EDP or Parfum version of the same fragrance in winter. It's the most cost-effective way to adapt a fragrance that already works for you.
What's the difference between perfume and aftershave?
Aftershave has a very low concentration of essential oils (1-3%), contains soothing agents and is designed to calm the skin after shaving. It lasts less than an hour and doesn't replace a fragrance. Many houses produce an aftershave paired with their main fragrance.
How can you tell if a fragrance is original?
The batch code printed on the box must match the one engraved on the bottom of the bottle. The original cellophane fits snugly and is neatly sealed. Only buy from resellers with a registered VAT number and traceable supply channels.
